Today, less than 1% of eligible Americans serve in the military, leaving most people with few personal connections to veterans. This divide makes reintegration difficult—half of veterans say returning to civilian life is challenging, and many struggle to find the support they need.
Veterans Coming Home (VCH) launched in 2016 to bridge this gap through storytelling and community engagement. Partnering with 14 PBS stations and a diverse team of veterans and civilians, we created local and national content that challenged stereotypes and explored shared values. VCH reached over 4.8 million viewers online, drew 50,000+ attendees to live events, and helped raise over $80,000 for veteran services—all while training station partners in impactful digital storytelling
SEASON 2 TRAILER
(IN)Visible Wounds.
Season 2 of VCH focused on opening up conversations about the key drivers of successful veteran reintegration — Health, Jobs, Community and Purpose. This first flagship episode explores issues related to physical and mental health and the tendency of veterans to suppress their physical and mental needs. Viewers told us that the flagship series opened up conversations between veterans and their friends and family that they had never been able to discuss before.
DISPELLING MYTHS
We asked veterans to identify some of the most persistent and aggravating myths civilians have about military life and then created a series-within-the-series called Military Briefs that dispels them. This episode examines the data on why people enlist in the military. (Hint: it’s not because they need the money.)
A VET & HIS DOG WALK INTO A BAR…
Getting veterans to talk about their vulnerabilities is very hard… and growing an online audience is even harder. One strategy we used was to work with veteran comedians to create short, funny videos with relatable insights that would be widely shared. This video has been watched by more than a million viewers on social media and helped drive subscribers to our main platform.
